gingerbread men

Thanks Gummy for the Gingerbread boys tutorial. It was a perfect afternoon, much needed at our house. A good break in the routine with good company. (Why are there no pictures of you and I, Adrianne?) Best part of all, I still have dough and frosting in the fridge for another sinfully good batch. Yum.

p.s. Sophie did her own hair... rockin' the sweet headband made out of ribbon! he he.

a couch of her own

I am lucky. I'm lucky because I have five amazing sisters. It is really fun, sometimes a hair dramatic, but mostly really fun. My actual youngest sister is Lauren. ( Younger than her is Naomi, who is actually my cousin but my parents have custody... enter long story for another day.) Lauren is cool because she is just as beautiful on the inside as she is outside. She is happy and nice and she is just so fun to be around. I was at the perfect age, 9 1/2, when she was born, for instant bonding. I loved toting her around, getting her dressed, setting her up in photo shoots with all my stuffed animals, and sneaking her out of time-out. Ya know, the things you do with little siblings. She was such a fun "baby" of the family because she kept us all young at heart.
She was a funny little kid who loved things "her" way. She had her "own" couch that only she could sit on while she watched Elmo or that darn "pink video" of young children singing primary songs. She was the youngest and super cute so of course she got away with it. We loved her!
Ruby today showed her deep down rebellious side. She avoided the nap completely even after two long (1 hour each) attempts by me. Delirious, but awake, she was finally rescued. She then went straight to the couch, took off all the pillows and blanket and sat down cross-legged and held the remote at the TV. I turned on a show and she sat there and watched. (Thank you Yo Gabba Gabba.)
Just like this. No joke. I did not pose her. She did this all on her own. She has never even watched a show before or given the TV any attention really, I mean she is one for crying out loud.
I tried to sit with her. So did Parker. So did Soph. We were all pushed away with intensity. She wanted her own couch. It reminded me of someone I love very very much. And if Ruby turns out anything like Lauren I will be so happy!

What a nut...

Parker chose his own outfit this morning. It consisted of his Jim Talbot campaign shirt 2 sizes too big, his swimsuit, and then nicely topped off with his snow boots. He was outside in no time to shovel our driveway and the rest of the neighborhood. Funny kid!

A New Year.

Oh the resolutions I could write and the things I should change. The list is super long. Don't get me wrong, I have them and I am working on them. I have to wonder though what happens between January and December each year. Do I actually lose track of my goals? Does life overwhelm me and I forget that I wanted to change? Perhaps. Or do I just stop caring as much? Ugh.

I do know that every January I am sooo ready for Spring. Spring cleaning, spring clothes, spring weather, oh I crave it. I am guilty of not living in the moment from January until it is really Spring.

Yep. Here it is not Spring. It is Winter. It is bleak, it is yucky, and that nasty inversion is making me feel like a crazy person. But it is still a new year, and that is good. I like new and I like change. As a kid I used to rearrange the furniture in my room just to have that fresh, new feeling. I love changing things around my house. It feels good. And I actually like trying to change me. Even if it is hard and not so fun. I could use the change, I could be so much better.

I could drink more water.
And exercise longer and harder.
And I could hug my kids more.
And play with them more often.
I should read more.
I could develop a stinkin' hobby... ( side story here is that I am currently looking for a hobby.
Who does that? Who has to try to find a hobby. Potential mid-life crisis material....)
I could eat less.
I could be a better communicator.
Be offended less.
Try new things.

This list could get super long. But I will spare you.

This year I just hope to change, little by little, and hopefully become a better wife, mom, daughter, sister, friend, person.

Good thing I have year after year after year of resolutions to do this. Now how to endure until Spring? Any ideas?

mexico... part 1

John and I were lucky to go to Mexico after Christmas with the group Families Helping Families. What a perfect week. We are already thinking about next year.
On the drive down we stayed in Laughlin, Nevada. A little gem of a town that sits on the Colorado stream..er river. It looked like a stream to me. But we ponied up the big bucks and John sweet talked the reservation desk and we stayed in a room on a boat. Here is John and Dan putting sunglasses on Mr. Laughlin.
The boat. And us.
The hotel in all it's glory at night.
Parker, Arizona. Yippeee.
Mariachi night. Aye, Aye, Aye, Aye.
Papa.
Learning the saw.
Soccer games every night after working on the house were the huge hit. This is the last night. I believe it was Mexico 2 USA 1 for the series.
Regina's dinner... the "mocajete"
Dinner at Flavios.
Zach and Lauren.
Mariachi band.
Emily. Isn't she adorable? Those cheeks! The kids in the neighborhood that we were working in came to hang out at the house every day. I wanted to bring them all home. They were so cute. Plus, I was missing my kids so it was nice to get little people hugs all week.
The house in progress.
Building a wall with my hubby. It was soooo fun to spend so much time with him!
Juan. I loved him. He was my favorite. He worked all day long on the house. Or would take our wood scraps and build things out of them. He was a.dor.a.ble.
Me and A.
All the cute little girls. Dulce, Natalie, Emily and Fanny. Too cute.
This is the beautiful lady who we built the house for. Her name is Paulina. She was so grateful and beautiful. It was such a wonderful experience to help her. These families work so hard to qualify for these homes and it is wonderful to be able to help them.
The Parker/Buxton/Jacobsen/Murdock/Connors crew
such fun people.... :)

Oh yah, the condo too.
What a perfect week.
